Heather Allhouse name Sun Conference Academic All-Conference, December 11, 2011



DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sun Conference announced the Academic All-Conference honorees for the league’s five fall sports on Monday. To be eligible for Academic All-Conference consideration, student-athletes must have attended their respective institutions for at least two semesters and have achieved a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average.

There were 97 student-athletes that represented the five sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

In addition, to earning Academic All-Conference recognition, there were six student-athletes who have the distinction of carrying a perfect 4.0 grade point average. That list includes SCAD Savannah’s Alex Shipley, Ave Maria’s Lill Lukacs, Southeastern’s Laura Ackard, Webber International’s Suzannah Wyatt and South Carolina Beaufort’s Devon Mock.

11 Student-Athletes Earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Honors

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athlete roster and the list included 11 student-athletes from seven different Sun Conference institutions. Southeastern led the way with three honorees followed by St. Thomas and Warner with two and Embry-Riddle, Florida Memorial, SCAD Savannah and Webber International with one each.

In order to qualify for the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Leesburg star to play volleyball for Webber

LEESBURG -- Tim Edfors has done miracles with the volleyball team at Webber International University.

The program was 6-23 the year before he became the Warriors' coach three years ago, and he led the Warriors to a 29-6 record, the best in school history, and an NAIA national ranking during the season.

Edfors has an eye for volleyball talent, and he thinks Leesburg senior middle blocker Heather Allshouse can help his program maintain its success.

Allshouse, who is 6 feet 1, signed Wednesday with the Warriors.

She was an important member in what became the best volleyball season in Leesburg's history this past fall. The Yellow Jackets were 14-8 this season and went further in the state playoffs -- the region semifinal -- than ever before. Allshouse led Leesburg with 38 blocks and was third with 74 kills.

"I really liked the way the coach [Edfors] interacted with the girls on the team," Allshouse said about her visit to the team and the school's campus in Babson Park.

Edfors first contacted Allshouse last summer when he was putting together a collection of volleyball players to travel to Hawaii for a tournament. Although Allshouse had other commitments and couldn't go, it opened communications between the two.

"I have been playing volleyball for seven years in a row, and as my senior year came around, I knew I wanted to play volleyball in college," Allshouse said. "After my high school season was finished and club season came, I knew I wanted to play in college."

Allshouse plays with the Lake County Juniors program.

Jo Anne Mincy was named the most outstanding player on the 1979 Leesburg High junior varsity volleyball team, Coach Hugh Parrish recently announced.

Other award winners on the JV's 20-2 squad include: Karen Rutschow and Rhonda Gray, best servers; Lynette Freitag and Rutschow, best passers; Gray and Nancy Harvey, best setters; Freitag and Mincey, best Spikers; Gray and freitag, best blockers

Freshman Janet Lynum was named the most improved player.
